Ledger Owners Started Receiving Threatening Mails For BTC Ransoms

Multiple Ledger owners started receiving threatening emails for a BTC ransom after the wallet data was leaked on a hackers’ forum website as reported previously in our cryptocurrency news.

One user was even asked to pay $500 or face being invaded in his home. The threats emerged once the personal details were leaked and published on a public forum that is mostly used by hackers. The user who got threatened for $500 had this message written to him:

“If not, I’m not afraid to show up when you least expect it and see how my wrench works against your face, or maybe even wait for you to leave your home and take your belongings whilst you’re not there to call the police,” the anonymous person said in the email. The Ledger customer said they are not worried, and that they receive several of these emails and text messages per day now.”

One of the ledger owners said that he gets about 4 emails a day and also 5 to 6 text messages every day. The Ledger hack led to the leak of names, phone numbers, addresses of Ledger customers which came from a hack of the e-commerce database by Ledger back in June. Ledger pointed out that the data of the users’ holdings was not released nor the access to their currencies which the company doesn’t possess.

The data, however, has enabled those that have seen the database to identify who owns a Ledger wallet and in some cases find out where they live. The wallets are also quite expensive and users owning the wallets are likely to hold reasonable amounts of crypto which makes them prime targets. This suggests that these kinds of emails will become commonplace to the ones who had their data stolen. The CTO of Casa Jameson Lopp put it: “Strap in for scareware.”

Today we were alerted to the dump of the contents of a Ledger customer database on Raidforum. We are still confirming, but early signs tell us that this indeed could be the contents of our e-commerce database from June, 2020.

The hacked Ledger data had more than a million Ledger customer emails which were leaked on the hacker site Raidforums. The data was stolen during the June 2020 hack of the hardware wallet producer’s e-commerce database. There was no financial information, keys, or recovery phrases exposed in the attack. About a million customer emails that were likely stolen from the hardware wallet producer Ledger were made available to the public on a hacker site today.
