IOTA Released Stronghold, the software library for secure password manager that can be easily integrated into customer-specific hardware. In the IOTA news crypto today, we read more about the new software.
With Stronghold, IOTA released the software library for secure management of digital assets and it can be even used independently for the MIOTA cryptocurrency. Stronghold is a collection of multi-purpose libraries for securely managing passwords, personal data, and private keys, laying another foundation block for the further IOTA adoption. As Daniel Thompson described, the secure management of digital data is one of the main priorities in the overall concept of the platform.
To accomplish this mission, IOTA released Stronghold to enhance the working environment for developers and to enhance the security of applications by providing everyone a better option for securely storing and using high-value digital secrets. Stronghold is a software implementation with the main purpose of isolating digital data from hackers. Stronghold uses a file-based snapshot with double encryption that can be backed up between devices. The main goal is to isolate the activity of the “privileged functions”
“For example, a primary goal is to create a software enclave where private keys are used to sign messages without revealing those keys to other functions. In the near future, we expect to move the Stronghold stack to Trusted Execution Environments (TEE) and integrate it into custom hardware.”
The specific characteristics of the library are that Stronghold is independent of IOTA and at a low level it can be used without the high-level library which means that any industry can use it. Right now, Stronghold is not ready for mass production as the library hasn’t been tested for security breaches. The release of Stronghold is intended to encourage the open-source community and to test its implementation. The IOTA foundation plans to do an external audit in the autumn of 2020 but the project will only be declared ready to use after the audit is completed:
“The very first internal test of Stronghold will be in its integration with the forthcoming official wallet built for Chrysalis. It will be the storage mechanism for securing seeds and personally identifiable information.”
The co-founder of IOTA Dominik Schiener said:
“The backbone of the upcoming #IOTA Wallet: Stronghold, our approach to secure private key and data management written in #Rust. The building blocks for the new future of IOTA and #Chrysalis are coming together.”
