The JINN project is one of the most exciting projects for the IOTA cryptocurrency. Even though the cryptocurrency itself presents a software protocol, there is still some hardware components which could mark the big breakthrough for IOTA.
As you will see from the upcoming altcoin news, the JINN project is an exciting thing for IOTA – presenting a revolutionary microprocessor that is based on trinary calculation methods. This means that the processor not only knows the states 0 and 1 like any other, but also knows -1.
JINN is expected to form the basis for any device to be able to confirm the two transactions (as required by Tangle) without having to switch on a computer. This would allow for any mobile phone, car or other machine to send transactions via Tangle. JINN will thus provide the technical basis for Qubic, too.
The JINN project has been discussed a lot by the community. A recent Discord release by David Sonstebo showed that all questions about this project will be answered next Monday, February 3rd. This will probably solve a lot of secrets surrounding the JINN project.

The IOTA news also show that JINN is not a new thing. The origins actually go back to 2014 when it was first announced in the NXT forum. For those of you who don’t know, NXT was invented by Sergey Ivanchenglo, the co-founder of IOTa who is also the key figure in the history of the JINN project for IOTA. At the time of creating it, Ivanchenglo wrote that he needs a solution based on trinary computation in order to realize Qubic.
However, this topic was kept secret from the beginning. The only hints that we saw in the cryptonews are ones related to the prototyping of the hardware which started in January 2015. There were some setbacks and later on, Sonstebo said:
“Having out in the open discussions about all of these things is unheard of in the start-up industry, and that is for plenty of reasons: it affects hiring process, venture capitalist evaluations, legalities, competitive edge and so on. So in an effort to avoid shooting ourselves in our foot, we will take the appropriate measures to prevent this.”
Later on (in October 2015) Sonstebo stated that IOTA “is needed to make JINN’s vision a reality” when he hinted a lot on the JINN project’s future:
“For anyone still wondering why it’s “taking so long”: it’s really not. We’re trying to redo computing itself here, it’s not an easy task. Even big companies spend years developing their new iterations, Jinn is no iteration, it’s a brand new paradigm, so patience is important.”
