The latest cryptocurrencies news take us to Japan, where the crypto community has apparently found a new way to meet and avoid crowded places. The Bitcoin Cash meetups are basically set within groups in Osaka and Tokyo, allowing members to virtually chime in at regularly scheduled events.
Even though Japan has less than 1,000 reported cases of infection, companies and organizers in the birthplace of cryptocurrency are starting to offer more suggestive language in announcements – mainly to curb the spread of the COVID-19 disease. The Bitcoin Cash meetups are a good way for people who work from home, reduce time on public transit and not attend large gatherings to still be able to discuss crypto.
One of the groups is the Tokyo Bitcoin Cash Meetup – a group that originally had two meetings scheduled for March which had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

However, the BCH meetup organizer Akane Yokoo notified the group members (known as “cashers” or “Bitcoiners”) on March 17 that the Bitcoin Cash meetups would instead be held virtually, saying:
“Our virtual meetups will start this coming Wednesday March 18th from 7:30pm and we plan to host every Wednesday at the same time when our physical meetups happen.”
What’s interesting and not connected to the Bitcoin Cash news is that high demand items such as toilet paper, masks and hand sanitizer are still not quite available in the country due to the coronavirus outbreak, which makes it difficult for people in at-risk groups to attend physical BCH meetups. However, Yokoo also suggested that visiting meetings in person were also possible:
“Even though we do not want to encourage members to go out and get sick, members should be free to do whatever they choose to do. If they choose to get together physically, the merchants are open for business as usual.”
As we reported yesterday, the largest blockchain conference in Japan recently got cancelled due to fears of additional spread of the COVID-19, urging many people to stay and work from home. Unfortunately, not all the events in Japan have been able to move successfully in the virtual world. The conference TEAMZ Blockchain Summit was going to take place from April 22 to April 23 but has been rescheduled for September.
