The largest social media network out there, Facebook, has recently promoted one of its senior engineers and made him a director of engineering for its new blockchain division. Evan Cheng is the name of the senior engineer which was working along with David Marcus (Coinbase board member and former president at PayPal) – all in order to explore the blockchain tech and see its potential use cases for the platform.
The team counted more than a dozen people and included senior executives from Instagram – reporting directly to the CTO of Facebook, Mike Schroepfer. In what’s known as an executive reshuffle, Evan Cheng is now the director of engineering. Similarly, Kevin Weil, the former VP of product at Instagram is the new VP of product in the blockchain division.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Cheng has been working at Facebook since November 2015 and has supported the programming languages and runtimes division for more than 3 years. Aside from this, Chang was part of Apple for over 10 years and is known as one of the inventors of LLVM, a compiler that generates the low-level machine code for Apple devices.
Chang is also listed as a blockchain advisor in the projects Ziliqa and ChainLink.
According to Mark Zuckerberg’s blog post on Facebook earlier this year, it is a challenge to study cryptocurrencies. He also said that centralization and centralized systems are a key problem that needs to be solved by technology, accelerating decentralization and “putting more power in people’s hands”.
