The popular short video sharing app Tiktok recently recorder its first viral Bitcoin related video as the firm’s owner reportedly launched a blockchain venture. The latest crypto news show that as TikTok creates its first viral video, we can see that the company also launched a new blockchain DLT venture.
Published by the TikTok personality known as “The Wolf of Bitcoins” – the video actually depicts a room in house that is apparently equipped with dozens of cryptocurrency mining hardware units. It also displays a short caption noting “this is why GPU prices went up,” and has a number of Bitcoin-related tags like “Bitcoin,” “explain Bitcoin” and “Bitcoin mining.”
TikTok creates its first viral video and at the time of writing, it has managed to amass more than 1.2 million views and over 109,000 likes on the platform. The cryptocurrency entrepreneur Thomas Shulz brought up the TikTok video in a tweet on December 14, where he described it as the “first viral Bitcoin TikTok.”
Shulz also clarified that he was not the one who made that video, noting that it was the first time when Bitcoin appeared on his TikTok feed. As TikTok creates its first viral Bitcoin video, the network has more than 500 million monthly active users and is definitely a player which could ramp up the use of BTC among the masses. It is also the third most downloaded app in the Apple App Store in the United States at press time.
The Bitcoin news show that this short video feed is managed by a purpose-built AI to predict and deliver content that the user will likely prefer. Many commentators have criticized TikTok’s approach to decide which videos to show users so far.
As a blog post in 2018 showed, a venture partner at the firm Andreessen Horowitz argued that TikTok creates videos but also “completely controls what users see” by using AI. At the time, she wrote:
“The platform can decide to show videos that are upbeat, funny, and/or wholesome — in fact, the entire vibe of the platform is largely under TikTok’s control because they, not users, decide which videos to display. Even if a user subscribes to a creator, there is no guarantee that he/she will see all of the creator’s videos.”
