Have you ever thought about buying cryptocurrencies from a newsstand?
This probably didn’t ever cross your mind. However, it seems like it is becoming a reality in Australia.
The big news comes from the Australian cryptocurrency exchange Bitcoin.com.au where buying Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) for fiat was made possible in more than 1,200 newsstands across the country.
From March 1, every Australian will be able to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum from their local newsstand – just like they buy newspapers. According to Bitcoin.com.au which sees itself as “one of the first independent Bitcoin exchange networks in Australia,” this is something that had to be done and an important move towards mass adoption of cryptocurrencies on the continent.
As Rupert Hackett, the CEO of Bitcoin.com.au stated:
“The fact that you can now buy Bitcoin and Ethereum from the same place you purchase soft drinks and stationery really speaks to how institutionalised cryptocurrency has become […] For anyone who has hesitated about buying Bitcoin because it all seemed too complicated, this is the perfect setup that takes the fear factor out of investing in digital currencies.”
Hackett believes that the introduction of BTC and ETH for purchase in more familiar retail environments will make people more comfortable with the decision of purchasing cryptocurrencies.
However, in order to purchase crypto from an Australian newsstand, one must first acquire a crypto wallet, scan their wallet’s QR code with the newsstand’s iPad mini and buy a minimum of 50 AUD ($39 USD) worth of Bitcoin or Ethereum.
Meanwhile, Australia is continuing to make steps towards bringing cryptocurrencies closer to the people and the technology behind them into the financial and retail environments.
